William A. "Bill" Dykstra, Jr., 88, Atchison, Kansas died Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at Carriage Square Health Center, St. Joseph, Missouri.
Mass of Christian burial will be Saturday, October 26, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Benedict's Church with Rev. Gabriel Landis, OSB as celebrant. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Saturday beginning at 10:00 A.M. at the church. Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Benedict Parish, Mt. Calvary Cemetery Endowment, Hands of Hope Hospice or Carriage Square Health Center and may be left in care of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home, Atchison, Kansas.
Bill was born July 20, 1925 in Atchison, Kansas the son of Willam A. Dykstra, Sr. and Gladys James Dykstra. He attended Franklin Elementary School, graduating from Atchison High School in 1943.
He and Barbara J. Lorenz were united in marriage on June 13, 1953 at Sacred Heart Church. Mrs. Dykstra preceded her husband in death on August 28, 2013.
Bill served in the United States Navy from October 1, 1943 until his honorable discharge on November 23, 1945.
He was employed with Midwest Grain Products Company as a safety director for twenty-five years retiring in 1987.
Bill was a member of St. Benedict's Church, Fleming-Jackson-Seever Post #6 of the American Legion and V.F.W. Post #1175 of Atchison. He enjoyed spending time with his wife and throughout their married life they enjoyed traveling, most especially their trip through Alaska.
Survivors include a brother-in-law, sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, a sister, Geraldine Bidding and two brothers, Aaron Dykstra and Wallace "Toby" Dykstra.
