Willa J. Hazelitt, 81, Atchison, Kansas died unexpectedly Saturday, July 28, 2012 at her residence.
Private family burial will be held at Ft. Leavenworth National Cemetery. A visitation with the family will be held Thursday, August 2, 2012 in the chapel of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home, Atchison, Kansas from 6:00 until 7:00 P.M. Memorial contributions are suggested to Atchison Project Concern and may be left in care of the funeral home.
Willa was born April 2, 1931 in Topeka, Kansas the daughter of Clyde and Gladys Chapman Lacy. She moved with her family at the age of 2 to Horton, Kansas where she was educated in the Horton Schools. She moved to Atchison, Kansas in 1943.
She and Willard D. Hazelitt, Sr. were united in marriage in 1948. Mr. Hazelitt preceded her in death in 1975.
Willa was employed with Lincoln Grain Company of Atchison, Kansas then with Western Auto and St. John's Hospital in Leavenworth, Kansas, returning to Atchison, Kansas and working in the dietary department of Atchison Hospital and in the geriatrics department and later as a guard for Rockwell International Corporation. She then became associated with Atchison Project Concern Senior Citizens Center where she served as a receptionist assisting with many capacities and duties until death.
She was a former member of the First Christian Church. In her spare time she enjoyed walking, camping, traveling, and gardening.
Willa is survived by two daughters, Theresa (Dan) Tilton, Highland, KS, Debbie (Bob) Foley, Bonner Springs, KS, a son, Willard Hazelitt, Jr., Oskaloosa, KS, two sisters, JoAnn McCray, Atchison, KS, Betty VanDiver, Atchison, KS, five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister and three brothers.
