Sister Sharon Murray, OSB

Sister Sharon Murray, OSB, 94, a Benedictine sister of Mount St. Scholastica, Atchison, Kans., died Monday, September 28, 2026, at the monastery. The vigil service will be Monday, October 5, at 7 p.m. in the monastery chapel, and the Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated there on Tuesday, October 6, at 10:30 a.m.

Sister Sharon was born in Chicago on June 24, 1932, the daughter of Leo and Melba Salkeld Murray. After completing elementary school, she was taught by the Benedictine Sisters of Chicago at their St. Scholastica Academy. This led her to Mount St. Scholastica College, from which she entered the monastery in 1954. With a bachelor’s degree in social studies and a master’s degree in history, she spent three decades as a teacher in elementary and high schools. In addition to serving in Iowa, Kansas and Missouri, she was part of the community’s foundation in Colorado, teaching there in the 1960s. Later she was an assistant professor of history at Benedictine College in Atchison. After retirement from the classroom, she was the efficient secretary and gracious receptionist for two years at the Mount Conference Center and the following fifteen years at the Atchison All Faith Counseling Center.

Sister Sharon was preceded in death by her parents and by her brothers, Jerome and James Murray. She is survived by nieces, nephews, and her monastic family.
