Shirley M. Downing

Shirley Mae Campbell Downing, age 66, of Lawrence, KS. passed away, Monday, January 2, 2017 at KU Medical Center in Kansas City, KS.

Funeral services will be Thursday, January 12, 2017 at 1:00 P.M. at the Second Christian Church with Rev. Paul Kelly officiating. Interment will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be January 12th from 11:00 A.M. until service time at the church. The family request that all memorial contributions in honor of Shirley are made to Second Christian Church Building Fund. The Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home has been entrusted with the final arrangements.

Shirley Mae Campbell was born on April 23, 1950 to the late Gilbert Campbell and Sophia (Burton) Campbell.

Shirley attended Washington Elementary, Atchison Junior High and Atchison Senior High, in Atchison, KS. Additionally she completed her Medical Transcript Certification at Northeast Kansas Technical Vocational School in Atchison, KS.

Shirley spent the majority of her working career serving in many roles at the Unified School District 409 Board of Education, Guidance Center, and Quality Care Group Home. She was an involved mother to her children, and perhaps even over-involved, with her grandchildren. Shirley enjoyed cooking, attending basketball, football, and volleyball games, choir and band concerts, school plays, playing in family card games, and all things related to Second Christian Church.

Shirley was beloved and active in her community. She was a faithful and proud lifetime member of the Second Christian Church holding multiple positions within the church including CWF, Church Executive Board, former Choir Director, Secretary, Member of the Usher Board, Kitchen and Finance Committee Member, and Church Treasurer. Shirley loved the power of music and sang in the Church Choir and the singing group Jesus Children.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Gilbert and Sophia Campbell; Three brothers, Clifford (Tip) G. Campbell, Phil S. Campbell and Clarence L. Campbell; Two sisters, Gracie Campbell and Sophia E. Boldridge; One son, Tyson Kyle Downing.

Shirley is survived by her six children. Kenneth W. Campbell, Farmington NM; Two sisters, Frances (Harl Jr.) Sampson, Farmington NM, Betty Winrow, Omaha, NE. Also left to cherish her memory, Matthew "Chic" Downing, Three sister-in-laws, Norma Campbell, Rogena Richards, Mildred Birch, Twenty-Seven Grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
