Ruth Marie Smith

Ruth M. Smith, 95, Atchison, Kansas died Sunday, December 15, 2013 at the Atchison Medicalodge where she had resided since April of 2010.
Memorial services will be Monday, December 23, 2013, at 10:00 A.M. in the chapel of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. Interment of the cremains will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to Atchison Humane Society and may be left in care of the funeral home.
Ruth was born June 19, 1918 in Atchison, Kansas the daughter of Ivins and Lottie Burke Plumb. She received her education in the Atchison Public Schools, graduating from Atchison High School in 1936. At age 19 Ruth enrolled at Fullerton Junior College in California graduating in 1938 and then attended and graduated from San Jose State Univeristy, San Jose, California in 1940 with a bachelor's degree in journalism.
Ruth was employed for the California State Department of Employment Service in Oakland and Hayward and later for State Board of Equalization in Plumas County at Quincy, California.
She and Lyman M. Smith were united in marriage on April 19, 1951 in San Leandro, California, residing in Weiser, Idaho. Mr. Smith preceded her in death on October 31, 1987. While residing in Idaho she wrote historical articles for a newspaper.
Ruth was engaged in a writer's group in Idaho and California prior to returning to Atchison, Kansas in May 1985. In Atchison she became associated with the Jagged Edge Writer's Group taught by Don Carlson. It was in Atchison the she wrote and published a novel, Tarnished Legacy, penned under the name of Kathy Wolfe.
An avid journalist and reader, Ruth was very passionate about researching information and the history pertaining to President Abraham Lincoln and wrote many articles in reference to President Lincoln.
An extensive traveler, she ventured throughout the United States and numerous foreign countries.
Survivors include a niece Patricia Howland, Bellflower, CA. She was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph S. Plumb, two nieces and other extended relatives.
