Ray Marvin Payne, 62, Atchison, Kansas died Monday, May 14, 2012 at Heartland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph, Missouri.
The body has been cremated. Memorial graveside and burial services will be Friday, May 18, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. at Oak Hill Cemetery, Atchison, Kansas. Memorial contributions are suggested to Atchison High School Athletic Department.
Ray was born September 20, 1949 in Topeka, Kansas. He was raised in Topeka and Atchison, Kansas by his parents Jack and Mable Peer Payne. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1968. During his high school years he was a member of the football team of Atchison High School playing quarterback and with the team advanced to state competition three different years.
Ray married his high school sweetheart, Claudia Jo Van Wey on November 16, 1968 in Atchison, Kansas. They were blessed with beautiful children. His family and loved ones were always central in his heart. Ray's life is a celebration of sincere goodness and deep kindness based on love. He will be greatly missed by all those that loved and knew him. He had many friendships with special thanks and appreciation to Carl Dunn.
Ray was employed as a truck driver for over thirty five years with Copp Transportation Company of Kansas City, Kansas.
He enjoyed fishing, auto repair, listening to classic-rock music and playing his guitar. Several years ago he was a member of a band called "Hour Glass".
Survivors include his Claudia Payne, Atchison, KS, a daughter, Ginger (Nick) Smith, Whiting, KS, five grandchildren and one great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cinnamon O'Donnell, his parents, a sister, Helen Hill and four brothers, Robert, James, Charles and Melvin Payne.
