Mildred "Joanne" McCray, 75, Atchison, Kansas died Monday, April 15, 2013, at Atchison Medicalodge.
Funeral services will be Thursday, April 18, 2013, at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with Pastor, Lou Davies officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Wednesday, April 17th, from 7:00 P.M. until 8:30 P.M. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to Atchison Medicalodge and may be left in care of the funeral home.
Joanne was born October 27, 1937, in Horton, Kansas, the daughter of Clyde and Gladys Chapman Lacy. She attended elementary school in Atchison and graduated from Atchison High School. Following graduation she went on to receive her LPN from Atchison Vo-Tech.
She and Donald R. McCray were united in marriage on June 8, 1956, in Atchison, Kansas. Mr. McCray preceded her in death on June 7, 1974.
Joanne began her career as an LPN at the Atchison Hospital then she went on to work at Atchison Medicalodge. After this she worked in the psychiatric department of the Veterans Administration Hospital in Leavenworth for over ten years until her retirement.
She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, enjoyed playing cards with friends and formerly served as a volunteer for March of Dimes. Her greatest enjoyment was spending time with her family, especially grandchildren and taking care of her beloved cats.
Survivors include a son, Terry P. (Cindy) McCray, Atchison, KS, a daughter, Peggy M. (Glen) Buckley, Atchison, KS, a sister, Betty Vandiver, Atchison, KS, eight grandsons and ten great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Glenn Lacy, Arlie Lacy, Jimmy Lacy, two sisters, Lorraine Heineken, and Willa Hazelitt.
