Michael Matthias, a cherished son, brother, and uncle, departed this world surrounded by his family on March 8, 2026, at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, Missouri. Born at the Atchison Hospital on March 18, 1967, he is the son of Henry H. “Hank” Matthias and Beverly (Helmstetter) Matthias. Mike's roots were firmly planted in the farmlands that shaped his character and spirit.
A graduate of the Midway Denton class of 1985, Mike embraced a life woven together with a deep love for farming, finding joy in nurturing the land and the creatures that called it home. His journey began as a rail car welder for Gunderson/Greenbrier until 2010. Mike transitioned into the role of truck driver for Whetstine and Servaes Quarries, but his heart never strayed far from the rhythms of the farm, always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need, particularly regarding cattle and pastures.
Mike was known for his warmth and infectious spirit. Relatives recount how he took the time to check in, ensuring everyone was faring well, often ending conversations with a heartfelt, "Tell my nieces and nephews that I love them!" His kindness was a beacon—radiating through the hearts of family and friends who adored him. Whether it was through his frequent visits to the Atchison Farmer's Market, where he shared his gardening knowledge, or the peaceful time spent fishing and hunting, Mike lived with an open heart and genuine love for life.
He leaves behind his mother, Beverly Matthias, along with siblings Brenda Langley, Sandy (Dave) Simpson, and Matthew Matthias. Mike's legacy will continue to shine brightly through his beloved nieces and nephews—Ashley (Ethan) Larson, Elizabeth Courtin, Chris Langley, Zack (Emma) Langley, and Bailey Langley—as well as his great nephews. These relationships were the fabric of his life, woven with laughter, adventure, and unconditional love. He is preceded in death by his father, Hank Matthias.
A rosary will be on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at 5:30 PM followed by visitation from 6-7:30 PM at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Benedict’s Church in Bendena on March 12, at 10:30 AM and he will be laid to rest in the church cemetery. Memorials may be left to St. Benedict's Church in Bendena in care of the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home.
Michael Matthias was more than just a name; he was a kind-hearted man whose warmth enveloped everyone lucky enough to know him. His legacy of love, generosity, and camaraderie will continue to inspire all of us.
