Mary Teresa Darrenkamp, 85, Atchison, Kansas died Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at her residence.
Mass of Christian burial will be Monday, January 21, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Benedict's Church with Rev. Gerard Senecal, OSB as celebrant. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A parish rosary will be recited on Sunday, January 20th at 4:00 P.M. in the chapel of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with visitation to follow until 5:30 P.M., and then family and friends will gather at Jerry's Again Restaurant for an evening of fellowship. Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Benedict's Church, Achievement Services or Atchison Catholic School and may be left in care of the funeral home.
Mary was born December 26, 1927 in Atchison, Kansas the daughter of Peter and Catherine Weinman Pickman. She attended St. Patrick's School south of Atchison.
She and Alfred Scherer were united in marriage at St. Patrick's Church in 1947, Mr. Scherer preceded her in death on June 4, 1958. She then united in marriage with Norman Darrenkamp on May 7, 1966 at St. Benedict's Church, Mr. Darrenkamp preceded her in death on November 19, 2007.
Mary served as a cook in the hot lunch program for St. Benedict's School and later for Atchison Catholic School for many years and then as a cook for Atchison Valley Hope until her retirement. She was known community wide for her baking and preparing numerous wedding cakes and birthday cakes, which she operated out of her home.
She was a member of St. Benedict's Church and formerly of St. Theresa Circle. A devout wife and mother, Mary was faced with many trials during her life but always had a smile on her face and pleasant demeanor without complaining as she provided for and raised her children. Mary was one of the seven original parents that founded Atchison Association for Retarded Citizens (now Achievement Services) with special emphasis on mandatory special education in the public school system.
Survivors include two daughters, Connie Freund, Prairie Village, KS, Cathy Miles, Lathrop, MO, two sons, Thomas Scherer, Cape Coral, FL, Robert Darrenkamp, Atchison, KS, step-son, Norm Darrenkamp, Atchison, KS, step-daughter, Linda Drannon, Highland, IL, step daughter-in-law, Chubbie Darrenkamp, Atchison, KS, six sisters, Rosie Gambon, Springfield, MO, Helen Zishka, Lenexa, KS, Joann Scherer, Basehor, KS, Virginia Kuckelman, Atchison, KS, Catherine Oliver, Basehor, KS, Betty DeHaven, Leavenworth, KS, three brothers, Jerome Pickman, Atchison, KS, Robert Pickman, Atchison, KS, Bud Pickman, Atchison, KS, sixteen grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Dennis Scherer, a daughter, Linda Seever, and three brothers, Al Pickman, Carl Pickman, and William Pickman.
