Margaret June (Miller) Friend

Margaret June Miller Friend, 86, Nortonville, Kansas, went to be with the Lord, on Saturday, October 20, 2012. She was the daughter of Dean and Violet Miller, Atchison, deceased.
Funeral services will be Monday, October 22, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at Cummings United Methodist Church, Cummings, Kansas with Rev. Nick Marsh officiating. Interment will be in Hiawatha Cemetery, Hiawatha, Kansas. Visitation with the family will be Sunday, October 21st from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home, Atchison, Kansas. Memorial contributions are suggested to Cummings United Methodist Church or Jefferson County Hospice and may be left in care of the funeral home.
She graduated from Baker University earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology, and a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She married her college sweetheart, John H. Friend, on June 4, 1948. They were blessed with six sons, Patrick (Pia), James (Susan), John M. (Diana) and William Friend. Two sons, Mark and Joseph Friend preceded her in death.
A popular Nortonville businesswoman, she was the owner of This Ol' House Quilt Shop and Antiques, Friendly Acres Greenhouse and Flower Shop, and a teacher at Washington Elementary. Her work ethic began early working as a carhop at her parent's business, Miller's Drug Store, Atchison.
June was a fabulous cook, gardener and her family, friends and church benefited from her talent and gifts of fresh flowers. A member of the Cummings United Methodist Church since 1951, and was the church organist and pianist for 60 years.
A talented quilter, June hosted the Northeast Radio quilt talk show on KNZA, a published designer and author of quilt pattern books, and a poet. She was a member of the Kaw Valley Quilters Guild, as well as an instructor and speaker on quilting.
Survivors include her husband, John H. Friend, Jr., of the couples home, four sons, Patrick Friend, Atchison, KS, James Friend, Shawnee Mission, KS, John M. Friend, Ozawkie, KS, William F. Friend, Dallas, TX. June was a proud grandmother to Jared (Jensine) Friend, Samuel Friend, Nicholas (Sarah) Friend, Hillary Friend, Savanna (Chris) Friend Crow and Stephanie Bertling and Kelli (Clint) Holliefield. She was also a great-grandmother to Jackson, Jacob, Eli, Noah, Allie, Ryan and Brooklyn.
