Lillian Doris Cochran

February 17, 1917 — June 19, 2017

Lillian D. Cochran, 100, Atchison, Kansas, died Monday, June 19, 2017, at Atchison Senior Village.

Funeral services will be Friday, June 23, 2017 at 10:30 A.M. in the chapel of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with Rev. Matt Broxterman officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Thursday, June 22nd from 6:30 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to Atchison Library or the Atchison YMCA and may be left in care of the funeral home.

Lillian was born February 17, 1917, in New County, Arkansas, the daughter of David Stanley and Lillian Shefa Gilmore Joseph. She attended school in Arkansas.

She and William Cochran were united in marriage on February 15, 1935 in Liberty, Missouri. Mr. Cochran preceded her in death on March 30, 2008.

She and her husband came to Atchison in 1936, and in 1942, they opened the Victory Café. They owned and operated that café until a major flood. Following the urban renewal of 1963, they operated the Suzy Q restaurant. Lillian herself also worked at Thompsons restaurant for five years and then managed the LaMall restaurant until the late 1970's.

Lillian was an avid reader especially of the large print books at the Atchison Library. She enjoyed swimming and water exercises at the YMCA. She also enjoyed her flowers, crocheting and doing colored pencil drawings.

Lillian is survived by a son, Don Cochran, Kirkland, WA, three daughters, Joyce (Jack) Wininger, Denver, CO, Linda (Mike) Van Dyke, Topeka, KS, Judy (Richard) Green, Atchison, KS, a daughter-in-law, Bonnie Cochran, Odessa, MO, a son-in-law, John Van Dyke, Sr., Atchison, KS, twenty-nine grandchildren, sixty-one great grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband William, a son, Glen Cochran, two daughters Mona Cantrell and Mary Van Dyke, four brothers, Kyle, Louis, John, Jack, and four sisters, Edith, Annis, Cathleen, and Josephine, a daughter-in-law, Claire Cochran.
