Leonard was born on December 11, 1924, south of the St. Patrick's community. He was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Koester Penning. Leonard graduated from Potter High School in 1942.

He and the former Ethelreda Scholz were united in marriage on October 18, 1948, at St. John's Catholic Church in Doniphan, Kansas.

He was a life-long farmer in the St. Pat's community, served on Union 2 school board and was past Grand Knight of Council #818 of the Knights of Columbus. He was very proud of being the longest member of this council, joining at the age of eighteen. He was a charter member of the William T. Jochems General Assembly of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Assembly #1716.

He enjoyed his mules and horses and owned several teams of each throughout his life. He loved watching his kids and grandkids participating in local, state and national corn shucking contests, driving a wagon with his own mules or horses in local contests. Riding horses on Sunday and going for all-day cattle drives with all of the kids saddled up on their horses was always fun. In 1977, Leonard added the Penning Jersey milking operation to the family farm.

Leonard was a supporter of Maur Hill-Mount Academy and Atchison Catholic Elementary School (ACES) in Atchison, driving his grandkids to school in his van. His license tag read "Grandpa's Bus".

Leonard is survived by his wife of sixty three years, Ethelreda Scholz Penning, Atchison, KS, two daughters, Karen (Wayne) McCullough, Hays, KS, Louise (Jay) Wells, Platte City, MO, three sons, Robert (Katherine) Penning, Atchison, KS, Thomas (Theresa) Penning, Atchison, KS, Michael (Karen) Penning, Atchison, KS, he was very proud of their fourteen grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. They always brought a smile to his face. Also surviving are a sister, Dorothy Scholz, Atchison, KS and two brothers, Gerald Penning, Atchison, KS and Louis Penning, Atchison, KS.
