Lawrence "Larry" D. Winegardner

Lawrence D. Winegardner, 93, passed away January 4th, 2014, at the Medicalodge of Atchison, KS. He was born January 28, 1920, in Skiatook, OK, to Harry and Mabel Winegardner. He attended schools in Kansas City, MO. Larry married Barbara Louise Branham on March 21, 1941, in Kansas City, MO.

He was a veteran of WW II, serving in the Army Air Corps from July of 1942 until December of 1945. He was stationed in the China-Burma-India Theater of operations and was assigned to the 4th Combat Cargo Squadron as a radio operator flying into Burma and later flying the Hump, carrying supplies to China. Larry was a member of the American Legion Post #6 and the VFW Post #1175 of Atchison, KS.

Following WW II, Larry attended an electronics technical school in Kansas City and was licensed by the Federal Communications Commission as a First Class Broadcast Engineer. He worked at radio stations in Georgia, Arkansas and Indiana before assuming the position of Chief Engineer for KARE Radio in Atchison, KS, in 1952. He worked at KARE until his retirement on January 1, 1990.

Larry was a member of the First Christian Church of Atchison. He gave freely of his time to the Cub and Boy Scouts of America while his sons were involved. He enjoyed reading and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

He was a member of the Masonic fraternity for more than 50 years, serving Active Lodge 158, Atchison, KS, as Worshipful Master in 1971 and 1991 and also as Secretary for many years. Larry served the Grand Lodge of Kansas as Most Worshipful Grand Master in 1984-1985. He was a member of the Lawrence Valley of the Scottish Rite and was coroneted a 33rd Degree Mason in 1999. He was a member of the York Rite Bodies of Atchison, KS, the National Sojourners of Leavenworth, KS, and the Hi-12 Club of Atchison, KS.

Larry was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Barbara, who died in December of 2008. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Helen Farrimond and Dorothy Cernech, and brother, Walter Winegardner. Survivors include sons, David Winegardner and his wife Cheryl of Golden, MO and Philip Winegardner and his wife Patricia of Overland Park, KS; grandchildren, Matt Winegardner of Columbia, MO, Laura Winegardner of Chicago, IL, and Jeffrey Winegardner of San Antonio, TX; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Saturday, January 11th from 10 to 11:00AM at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home, 208 N 5th, Atchison, KS. Funeral service and Masonic Chapel Services will follow immediately after at 11:00AM. Private burial will be held at a later date.
