John W. "Jack" Davis

John W. "Jack" Davis, 72, Atchison, KS, died Saturday, January 19, 2013, at the Heartland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph, MO.

No formal funeral services will be held at this time. Stories about Jack's life will be shared Friday, January 25, 2013, at 6:00 P.M. with visitation to follow until 8:00 P.M. in the chapel of the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. Private family services and burial of cremated remains will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Jack Davis Memorial to be used in the Benedictine College Biology Department, and may be left in care of the funeral home.

Jack was born on December 2, 1940, in Atchison, Kansas, at the Atchison Hospital the son of William R. and Frances Seeger Davis. He attended Maur Hill Prep School graduating in 1958. He continued his education at Emporia State University, graduating with degrees in Biology, Botany, Zoology, Library Science and English. In 2004, Jack earned his Doctorate of Philosophy with an emphasis in Botany.

Jack spent most of his life as a schoolteacher and mentor to many students. He taught in Ulysses, KS, Atchison High School and Benedictine College, Atchison, KS where he retired in 2010. He also owned and operated M & C Floral and Oak Street Greenhouse for many years. Jack was a professional taxidermist, a professional rattlesnake hunter and in his early years was an avid hunter.

One of the most important parts of Jack's life were his horses; he was an avid horseback rider. For more than twenty-five years he participated in the Trail Ride Events in Eminence, Missouri. He was a member of the Atchison Elks Lodge.

Survivors include two brothers, Frank Davis, St. Joseph, MO, and Louis Davis, Bonner Springs, KS.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
