John David Flynn

John David Flynn, 68, retired teacher and coach for Maur Hill/Mount Academy School, died Saturday, April 7, 2012 at Shepherd's Residential Home in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at Friday, April 13, 2012 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Benedict's Abbey with Rev. Gerard Senecal, OSB as celebrant. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A parish and Knights of Columbus rosary will be recited on Thursday, April 12th at 7:00 P.M. at St. Benedict's Church, visitation with the family to follow until 8:30 P.M. Memorial contributions are suggested to the John & Patty Flynn Scholarship at Maur Hill – Mount Academy School or the American Alzheimer's Association and may be left in care of the funeral home.

John was born August 17, 1943 in Kansas City, Missouri the son of David Daniel and Marie Ruth Moran Flynn. He attended St. Frances Xavier Elementary School in Kansas City, Missouri until moving with his family to Atchison, Kansas in 1953 where he attended St. Benedict's Elementary School, then Maur Hill Prep School where he graduated in 1962. He attended St. Benedict's College for one year where he was a member of the football team then attending Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri where he played football for two years, returning to St. Benedict's College where he graduated in 1970. John worked for Midwest Solvents in the lab during his college years in Atchison.

He and Patricia (Patty) L. Purslow were united in marriage on May 30, 1967 at St. Benedict's Church, Atchison, Kansas.

Following his college graduation he accepted a position as teacher and coach at Saints Peter and Paul in Seneca, Kansas for three years. He then moved to Leavenworth, Kansas teaching and coaching for two years at Immaculata High School. He returned to his Alma Mater in 1975, after Father Edwin Watson offered him the assistant football coaching position under Coach Guy Galley. After coach Galley retired in 1977, he was honored to assume the position as head coach. During his fifteen year reign of coaching the Maur Hill Ravens his record was ninety-nine wins and forty-eight losses. He took them to the play-offs six times, won the state championship in 1979, was state runner up in 1984 and state championship winner again in 1992. He coached in the Shrine Bowl in 1980. He was also the athletic director from 1992-2004. He retired in 2008 and substituted for a year in 2009.

He was a member of St. Benedict's Church, Council #723 of the Knights of Columbus and Bellevue Country Club.

He had served with the Missouri Air National Guard.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Patty Flynn of the couples home in Atchison, a son, Matt (Rachael) Flynn, Glendale, AZ, two daughters, Molly (Jack) Burgess, St. Joseph, MO, Maggie (Chad) Winder Troy, KS, a sister, Julie Ann Staudenmaier, Bendena, KS, six grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, and a step-great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Mary Jane Suther.
