Dr. John Joseph Dolenz, Ph.D., 82, Kansas City, Missouri, died Sunday, Septmeber 15, 2013 at Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.
Mass of Christian burial will be on Thursday, September 19, 2013 at 1:00 P.M. at Sacred Heart Church with Prior Jeremy Heppler, OSB as celebrant. Graveside services will be Saturday, September 21st, in Batesville, Arkansas, at Oaklawn Cemetery, under the direction of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. A rosary will be recited on Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at 6:00 P.M. in the chapel of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with visitation to follow until 7:30 P.M. Memorials are suggested to St. Benedict's Abbey for Vocations Fund.
Dr. Dolenz was born on July 17, 1931 in Barton, Wisconsin to John Joseph Dolenz and Martha Kircher Dolenz. The family moved to Coffeyville, Kansas where John attended elementary and grade school. He attended high school with the intent of entering the priesthood in the order of the Passionists. As a brother seeking ordination, he attended the Catholic University in Washington, DC. John exited the priesthood to pursue a career in psychology at the University of Kansas where he earned his master's degree. He worked at the Veterans Administration Hopsital in Kansas City, Missouri, treating veterans with mental illness for several years prior to attending the University of Ottawa in Ontario, Canada where he earned his doctorate in psychology. He worked in the Veterans Administration for 15 years treating veterans with alcohol and drug addiction until he attended Rutgers University to obtain additional credentials to work as a Chief of Neuropsychology at the Topeka Veterans Administration Hospital in Topeka, Kansas for the next 7 years.
He and Jetta Maxine Parmer Dolenz were united in marriage in 1959 at Christ the King Church in Kansas City, Missouri. He filled his retirement years working on the family farm in Newport, Arkansas raising pecans and harvestable timber. His primary interests were in growing his faith through continued study of scriptures and associated texts. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors include his only child, Dr. John Andrew (Kay) Dolenz, D.D.S. of Atchison, Kansas, two brothers, Dr. Bernard Dolenz, M.D., JD. of Fort Worth, Texas, and Frank (Alicia) Leitheiser of Long Beach, California, three grandchildren, Karis Dolenz, Karl Dolenz, and Bruce Dolenz, and 15 nieces and nephews.
Dr. John was preceded in death by his wife, Jetta Maxine Parmer Dolenz, his older brother, James (Connie) Dolenz, and his parents.
