Jerome Wolters

August 14, 1934 — July 15, 2023

Atchison

Jerome H. Wolters, 88 years old, of Atchison, Kansas died Saturday, July 15, 2023, at Medicalodge of Atchison.

Mass of Christian burial will be Thursday, July 20, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Benedict Church with Rev. Jeremy Heppler, OSB as celebrant. A parish rosary will begin at 9:45 a.m. at the church on Thursday, with visitation to follow. Memorials may be made to St. Benedict Catholic School (SBCS) or Maur Hill-Mt. Acadmey (MHMA) and may be left in care of the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home.

Jerome was born August 14, 1934, in Atchison, Kansas, the son of Henry and Helen "Nellie" (Fuhrman) Wolters.  He attended school in Atchison, graduating from Maur Hill Prep in 1952.

Jerome proudly served his country with the United States Navy from February 9, 1953, until his honorable discharge on February 8, 1957.

He and Judy M. Vanderweide were united in marriage on February 3, 1962, at St. Joseph Church in Atchison. As they raised their kids, Jerome had many enjoyable times with his family, especially trips to the Lake of the Ozarks and the sand dunes with his children and grandchildren.

Jerome was a heavy equipment operator and a member of the Operating Engineers Local 101. He was a hard worker his entire life and could operate or build just about anything, even with refurbished materials.

He was a member of St. Benedict Parish in Atchison, the Sacred Heart Council 723 of Knights of Columbus and a member of William T. Jochems Assembly #1716 Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. He truly enjoyed the KoC and the social aspect and playing cards – he did not like to lose either! Jerome was even known to be the life of the party at times.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Wolters; a daughter, Susan (John) Schlag, Linwood, KS; three sons, Timothy (Kirsten) Wolters, Denver, CO; Scott (Shelly) Wolters, Peculiar, MO; Andrew (Angela) Wolters, Platte City, MO; a brother, John Wolters, Midwest City, OK; three sisters, Mary Margaret Church, Atchison, KS; Judy Zachary, Omaha, NE; Jane (Frank) Enzbrenner, Owasso, OK; thirteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
