Janice Rose Elliott, 92, passed away Monday February 4, 2013, at Medicalodges Atchison.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Arensberg Pruett Funeral Home at 7 pm, Friday, February 15th. The inter-religious celebration will be led by Fr. Benjamin Tremmel and Chaplain Ginger Geeding.

Memorials in honor of Janice are suggested in lieu of flowers to Verde Valley School in Sedona, Arizona, and the Humane Society of Atchison, and may be sent in care of the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home, 208 N. 5th Street, Atchison, Kansas 66002. Janice was the first music teacher at Verde Valley School in 1948, when she was just out of college. Janice always held the school near and dear to her heart, as well as loving and caring for animals.

Janice was born in Atchison, the daughter of Emil Charles and Hallie Vivian (Rowe) Overmiller. Janice married her life long partner Elden Elliott in 1949, preceding her in death in 2006. Her sister Hazel Neuforth also preceded her in death in 2012.

Janice earned a Bachelor of Music Degree at Southwestern College, Winfield, Kansas and a Masters degree at the Eastman School of Music, Rochester, NY. There she was the first woman to study music composition with the internationally known composer, Howard Hanson. Later she studied violin with Harold Berkley in New York City, and viola with George Fourel at Boston University.

Her compositions have been performed by members of the Denver Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonia of Greater Kansas City, the Colorado Sprigs Symphony, and others. She taught Music Theory, Composition, Violin, and Piano at St. Mary College in Leavenworth Kansas for 28 years, and previously at Washburn University for seven years, as well as many private students. She is credited as a major influence in many student's lives. Janice continued her lifelong ambition of playing violin and participated with the Atchison-Benedictine College Orchestra in a concert last November at age 91. She served as assistant concertmaster for many years, and previously played violin or viola in the Philharmonia of Greater Kansas City, the Topeka Symphony Orchestra, the Colorado Springs Symphony, and others.

Survivors include daughter Meredith (Elliott) Lockhart and her husband Gary of Nortonville, son Gordon Elliott of Overland Park, and grandson Nick Lockhart and his wife Carla of Cummings.
