Herbert Wallingford, 85, formerly of Atchison County Kansas, was called home to be with the Lord on Friday, August 19, 2016, at his home in Detroit, Michigan.
Funeral services will be Saturday, August 27, 2016 at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 826 Riley Street, with visitation and viewing at 10:00 A.M. and service to begin at 11:00 A.M. Interment will follow in Pardee Cemetery. The Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home has been entrusted with the final arrangements.
Herbert was born July 20, 1931 to the union of Herbert Wallingford and America Sloan-Wallingford in Atchison, KS. He grew up on farms near Effingham, Kansas and attended Clinghan and Pardee Schools, and graduated from Atchison County Community High School.
At the age of sixteen, Herbert accepted Christ and joined the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atchison. He joined God's Grace Missionary Baptist Church in Ferndale, Michigan on April 3, 2011.
Herbert was a hard worker and had various jobs: Berry Chicken farm, Gladston Hotel, LFM Foundry, car wash, Kansas Veterans, and Missouri Pacific Railroad. He joined the Army in 1954. Herbert eventually moved to Detroit and worked for the Chrysler Corporation until his retirement in 1993.
Herbert married Shirley Churchill (deceased), Four children resulted from this union; three preceded him in death (David, Linda, Robert). He later married Johnnie Mae Whitehead (deceased) and was the stepfather to three children in this marriage. Herbert met the love of his life, Dorothy (Dollie) Rhinehart and was joined in marriage on September 25, 2010. Dollie preceded him in death on April 19, 2012.
He enjoyed socializing with family and friends, keeping up with his lottery numbers, putting puzzles together, driving his red charger and watching old western movies.
He leaves to cherish his memory son, Dale Wallingford, stepchildren Darold Whitehead and Karen Whitehead-Robinson; brothers, Maurice (Pat), Warren (Martha), Larry (Rhonda), and sisters, Kitty (Malcolm) and Dorothy Wallingford; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
