Gary L. Kovar, Atchison, Kansas passed away September 13, 2013 after a courageous battle with lymphoma. Gary was born March 3, 1943, in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Benjamin and Belva (Webb) Kovar. The family moved to Atchison in the late 1940s. Gary attended Atchison grade schools and graduated from Atchison High School in 1961.
Memorial services will be Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. Interment of the ashes will follow in Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Tuesday, September 17th from 7:00 until 8:30 P.M. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Atchison Humane Society and may be left in care of the funeral home.
Gary proudly served in the United States Army from 1965 until his honorable discharge in 1971. He spent two years of this tenure stationed at Coleman Barracks, Mannheim, Germany. He grew very fond of the German people and countryside, and was able to make a return visit to Germany in 2005 with his daughter.
Gary loved people and taking care of them. In the 1960s he worked as an EMT on the ambulance in Atchison. He also served as a sheriff's deputy in the 1970s and 1980s. He retired from the State of Kansas Atchison Juvenile Correctional Facility agter working over 30 years as a purchasing agent for the facility.
Gary loved to spend time with friends and family. He was often seen sitting by the river each morning in the company of his closest friends. He also loved all things in nature, especially the eagles at Sugar Lake. He enjoyed photography and took many wonderful photographs of sunrises and sunsets, animals and flowers.
He is survived by a daughter, Carrie L. Kovar, Ashburn, Virginia, and a sister, Linda K. (Charlie) Contreras, Atchison, KS. He is also survived by former wife Jill A. Kovar, and their shared grandchildren, Jaye Mathis and Darian Hines.
