Father Bertrand was born on October 18, 1927, in Aurora, Kan., the son of Napolean and Bertha (Murphy) LaNoue.
On July 10, 1945, Elric LaNoue entered the novitiate of St. Benedict's Abbey, receiving the religious name Bertrand. Following his novitiate he professed vows on July 11, 1946. He completed his BA degree in philosophy and mathematics in May 1949 and in July of the same year he professed his solemn vows as a monk. He then studied for the priesthood at the Abbey, being ordained a deacon on December 22, 1951, and ordained to the priesthood on May 22, 1952.
Always eager to help in the apostolates of the Abbey, Father Bertrand served as an assistant counselor at St. Benedict's College during the 1952-1953 school year. For the next three years he taught math and physics at Maur Hill Prep. From 1956 through 1958, he took on three jobs at St. Benedict's College: Economics Instructor; Manager of the Bookstore/Cafeteria; and Counselor.
In 1958 Abbot Cuthbert McDonald, recognizing his intellectual gifts, asked Father Bertrand to study at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. There he earned an M.B.A. with a concentration in Finance in 1959. In 1964 he earned his M.A. in Economics from the Wharton School, while teaching economics at St. Benedict's College from 1962-1964.
From 1964 through 1968 he studied economics at St. Louis University, earning his Doctorate. From 1966 until 1998 Fr. Bertrand taught economics at St. Benedict's College and Benedictine College. In the early 1990s, Abbot Owen Purcell asked Father Bertrand to begin a Development Office at the Abbey; he used his many connections to get this endeavor underway.
Upon his retirement from teaching in 1998, Abbot Barnabas Senecal asked him to become pastor of St. Joseph's and St. Patrick's Catholic Churches, Atchison. With the same love for his vocation, Fr. Bertrand embraced the pastoral life.
Upon retirement to the Abbey in 2010, Fr. Bertrand continued to participate in the liturgy and the common life of the community. He often had a positive word of encouragement to help brighten a confrere's day.
He is survived by nieces, nephews and the monks of the Abbey.
Father Bertrand was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers: Raoul, Bernard, Arcade, Hilaire and Carol.
