Ellen M. Cameron

Ellen M. Cameron, 84, longtime Atchison resident, died at the Vintage Park Assisted Living Center in Atchison on July 27, 2012.

Following cremation, a private burial will take place at the National National Cemetery in Leavenworth, KS. Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Jude Hospice, Vintage Park Memorial Garden in care of Cheryl Contreras, or First Presbyterian Church of Atchison and may be left in the care of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home, Inc. at 208 N. 5th Street Atchison, Kansas 66002.

Ellen was born November 12, 1927, in Springfield, Missouri, the daughter of Dr. Edwin W. Armstrong and Alice Willmeth Armstrong.

The former Ellen M. Armstrong and Richard "Dick" Cameron were united in marriage on August 28, 1948, in Parsons, KS.

Following her husband's military service, Ellen and her husband completed their college degrees at the College of Emporia. Ellen earned a liberal arts degree and later a Masters Degree in Social Work from the University of Kansas. She was chief social worker at the Youth Center for several years before going to work with her husband in the insurance business.

Ellen was an active member of the Republican Women's Group for many years. She was also a member of the Presbyterian faith where she formerly served as an Elder and a Deacon. Ellen was the first female to serve as an Elder in the Atchison church. She enjoyed spending her free time volunteering in civic and church activities, traveling, and spending time with her family her grandchildren especially.

Survivors include her son, Dick Cameron and wife Tera, Lansing KS, two daughters, Jane and husband Don Gray, Atchison KS, Ruth Ann and husband Hal Jackson, West Jordan, Utah, and her four grandchildren, Cole Gray, Andrew Cameron, Christopher Jackson, Jill Jackson-Smith and a great-granddaughter , Samantha Ellen Smith.

Ellen was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Sparling and Naomia Lear, her parents, and one niece.
