Elizabeth Mize Elicker

Elizabeth Mize Elicker, 92, passed away at her home in Chevy Chase, Maryland. She was the loving wife of Paul Elicker and the late Chester L. Mize.
A memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Atchison, Kansas at 11:00 A.M. on February 25th, 2012 with The Rev. Andrew Grosso officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Vernon Cemetery. The Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home in Atchison, Kansas has been entrusted with the final arrangements.
Betty was born in Atchison, Kansas on January 19, 1920 to Harry and Helen Muchnic. She was the younger sister of Bill Muchnic. She attended high school in Atchison and went on to Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in New York. Later she studied at the University of Kansas, where she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority.
On November 22, 1941 she married her childhood sweetheart Chester Mize, also of Atchison. Mr. Mize was at the time a Lieutenant in the U. S. Navy and was serving in World War II. They lived fully and raised three children in Atchison until Mr. Mize was elected U. S. Congressman in 1967. The family then moved to Washington, D. C. and traveled to Atchison regularly. Though Mr. Mize left the Congress in 1974, the couple remained in Washington and also lived part-time in Naples, Florida. They later divorced.
In 1985, Betty married Paul Elicker, of New York City. They lived in New York briefly and then moved back to Washington.
Betty was the proprietor of The Sign of the Whale, a gift store, in Georgetown and later in Annapolis, Maryland. Betty enjoyed immensely the responsibilities of buying for and running a shop full of lovely gifts. She eventually moved her business to St. Michaels, Maryland, where she had a second home. Betty will be remembered for her love of fun and travel. She surrounded herself with many friends and loved putting on a good party. She was generous with her family and friends and has been involved with philanthropy through the Muchnic Foundation.
She is survived by her son David of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Anne of Seattle, Washington. Betty was the loving grandmother to Christopher of Houston, Texas; Laura of Boynton Beach, Florida; Courtenay of Park City, Utah; and Meskerem of Seattle, Washington; and the great-grandmother of eight children.
She was predeceased by her daughter Janet.
