Elfreda M. Walz, 90, Atchison, Kansas, died Friday, December 29, 2017, at Atchison Medicalodge.

Private family graveside service will be held at a later date at Sunset Memory Gardens in Atchison. Memorial contributions are suggested to the First Christian Church of Atchison (Disciples of Christ) or the Atchison Library for large print books and may be sent in care of the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with whom the final care has been entrusted.

Elfreda was born December 1, 1927, in Easton, Kansas, the daughter of Otto and Marie C. (Kanning) Meinert. She attended St. John's Lutheran School, Easton, Kansas and graduated from Potter High School. She then attended the Kansas City Secretarial School in Kansas City.

She and William H. "Bill" Walz, Jr., were united in marriage on September 27, 1957, at the First Christian Church in Atchison, Kansas. Mr. Walz preceded her in death on May 1, 2003.

Elfreda was employed with Pillsbury Company and Commerce Acceptance Company, before becoming the Deputy Recorder of Deeds for Atchison County until her retirement.

She was a member of the First Christian Church, (Disciples of Christ) in Atchison, as a deaconess emeritus and a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class. She was active in the Christian Women's Fellowship. Elfreda was also a member of the County Extension Unit-Parallel Unit, a life member of Friends of the Atchison Library and the mystery book club of the library. She enjoyed reading, sewing, gardening, needlework and genealogy.

Survivors include a son, Steve (Karin) Walz, Atchison, KS, a daughter, Diane (David) Williams, Liberty, MO, three grandchildren, Scott Williams, Michael Williams, Elizabeth Walz, and a great granddaughter, Natalie Williams.

She was preceded in death by her husband, three brothers, Alfred Meinert, Vernon Meinert, Edwin Meinert, and a sister, Marlene Zabel.
