Edwin J. Amrein, 90, died Tuesday July 28, 2015 at his home.
Mass of Christian burial will be Monday, August 3, 2015 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Benedict's Church with Abbot Barnabas Senecal, OSB as celebrant. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A parish rosary will be recited on Sunday, August 2nd at 2:00 P.M. at Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with visitation to follow until 4:00 P.M. Memorial contributions are suggested to Mount St. Scholastica, St. Benedict's Abbey, St. Benedict School Endowment or Mt. Calvary Cemetery Endowment and may be left in care of the funeral home.
Edwin was born February 21, 1925 in Madison, Nebraska the son of Albert J. and Mary Barbara Deiter Amrein. He attended elementary school in Madison, before moving to Atchison in 1935 and graduating from Atchison High School in 1943. Following graduation he attended St. Benedict's College graduating in 1949.
He and Pauline Baumgartner were united in marriage on December 28, 1948, at St. Benedict's Church. Mrs. Amrein preceded him in death on January 3, 2006.
Edwin enlisted in the United States Army on Jul 16, 1943 serving in World War II.
He was employed with the Atchison Police Department for five years. Following that he was employed as a rural letter carrier for the United States Postal Service for 40 years until his retirement in 1989. He was a farmer, builder, and cabinet maker having built five homes in the neighborhood.
He was an 80 year member of St. Benedict's Parish, a former parish council member and Eucharistic minister. He was also a member of the Fleming-Jackson-Seever Post #6 of the American Legion, the Rural Letter Carriers Assoc. and NARF.
Survivors include Edwin F. and Karen Amrein, Wellington, KS, Paula Amrein and Michael Browne, Atchison, KS, Elaine Amrein, Atchison, Kansas, Jane and Melvin Baker, Marienthal, KS, Mary Beth (Jerry) Vadnais, Rosehill, KS, Margie Holben, Lansing, MI, Marian Amrein, San Antonio, TX, Alice Amrein and Tracey Underwood, James (Kelley) Amrein, Amherst, NH, Dorothy and Brad Gibson, 22 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Pauline, his parents, Albert and Mary Amrein , a sister Geraldine Amrein.
