Dorothy Spencer

Dorothy Lee Spencer was born on April 11, 1932 in Larmon, Mississippi to Alfred and Lucille Gaines. She was the 9th child of 12 born in the family. She attended Gibbs school until 6th grade. In her early adult years, Dorothy met Arthur Scott, and to this union, they had four children, this marriage was later dissolved. Dorothy moved her family from Mississippi to Omaha, Nebraska in 1952 for additional life opportunities.

While living in Omaha, Dorothy worked at a day care center and raised her 4 sons. She met a young man by the name of Anderson Spencer, and they were later married. They relocated to Atchison, Kansas where she gained employment at the Youth Center.

A woman of faith, Dorothy joined the Fellowship Baptist Church at an early age and was baptized by LC Franklin. She later became a member of Shiloh Baptist Church where she committed to God’s ministry. In her time at Shiloh, Dorothy made many friends. To know her was to lover her, she was sassy yet, full of life. Dorothy loved to dress up, she was a fashionist by virtue and could make any outfit look great. In the last of her days, Dorothy moved to Colorado where she lived with her son. She passed away peacefully on August 19,2026.

Dorothy Lee Spencer is preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Lucille Gaines; husband of more than 40 years, Anderson Spencer; her 3 sons, Jesse Scott, Jerome Scott and Randolph Scott; grandson, Marc Scott and her 11 siblings, Randolph Gaines, Rudolph Gaines, Hattie Walton, Evelyn Graham, Viola Scott, Mae Etta Pinn, Booker T. Gaines, Lenora McCray, Rowan Gaines, Juanita Peters and Johnnie Gaines. Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Arthur Scott; 9 grandchildren, Quentin Griffin, Angelique Evans, Felisha Scott, Katina Bradley, Marc Scott, Subrina Bradley, LeKiesha Scott, Randy Scott, and Monique Shelly; and a host of great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren. We will always love you and miss you, Granny. Rest Well.

Homegoing Services will be on Friday, September 25, 2026, at 1:00 pm at Shiloh Baptist Church with words of comfort provided by Rev. Michael Kelley. She will be laid to rest at Oak Hill Cemetery in Atchison, KS.
