Daryl D. Meyer

Daryl D. Meyer, 73, of Atchison, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 1, 2026, with his daughters by his side.

Born on June 4, 1953, in Beatrice, Nebraska, Daryl was the son of Gerald and Merrill (VonSteen) Meyer. He grew up in Beatrice, where he developed a lifelong love of agriculture and the rural way of life. He graduated from Beatrice High School in 1971 before attending the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in English. During his years at Nebraska, he formed friendships that became one of the greatest blessings of his life—friendships rooted in loyalty, laughter, and unwavering support that endured for more than five decades. He also remained a devoted Cornhuskers fan throughout his life.

Daryl spent his early career in banking as an agricultural loan officer, a role that allowed him to stay connected to the farming community he loved. Later, he found his true calling as a licensed addiction counselor with Valley Hope in both Norton, KS and Atchison, KS, where he dedicated himself to helping countless individuals find hope, healing, and a new beginning.

While he never farmed for a living, he was happiest in the country - taking his truck out on the gravel roads, admiring the crops, and talking farming with anyone who shared his interest. His love of John Deere was unmistakable, reflected in the collection of tractors and memorabilia he proudly displayed and the toy shows he enjoyed for many years.

Above all else, Daryl treasured his family, especially his grandchildren. He delighted in making his home a place they loved to visit, filling it with toys, games, and plenty of snacks. One of their favorite traditions was reaching into Grandpa’s shirt pocket to discover a hidden treasure of Goldfish crackers waiting just for them. It was a simple gesture that perfectly reflected the thoughtful, playful grandfather he was. As they grew older, he especially loved cheering on his grandchildren at their sporting events.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Merrill Meyer, and his brother, Gary Meyer.

He is survived by his daughters, Amy (Cody) Lewis and Sarah (Patrick) Altenhofen; his cherished grandchildren, Daniel, Gwyn, Nolan, Will, and Ellie; his sister, Cheryl (Ken) Hill; his brother, Kevin (Marty) Meyer; and many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and lifelong friends.

Honoring Daryl’s wishes, the family will gather for a private burial at the family farm.
