Charlotte Thompson

Charlotte Rae (Thomas) Thompson, age 85, a resident of Atchison for 67 years, passed away into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on January 15, 2026, at Atchison Senior Village. A private burial will be held at Mount Vernon Cemetery, with a family graveside service to be held at a later date.

Charlotte was born on January 9, 1941, in St Joseph, Missouri, to Charles Thomas and Bernice Beattie Thomas. She grew up in St Joseph and graduated from Lafayette High School.

On August 7, 1959, Charlotte married, Alfred “Sonny” Thompson. Together they built a life filled with family, hard work, laughter, and lots of love. Charlotte was a devoted wife and mother who raised four rowdy boys and helped Sonny run his masonry business for close to 50 years. She loved country music and enjoyed her Saturday nights out dancing with Sonny. She enjoyed her Thursday trips to St Joseph to check on family and hunt for garage sale treasures, and in her younger years she loved soaking up the sunshine and spending long afternoons outdoors. In the 1980s, she managed the Dress Racque in Atchison. She spent many of her active years managing several antique booths in the area and having yearly garage sales.

Charlotte has always been affectionately loved for her feisty, ornery personality. She spoke her mind, stood her ground, and kept everyone on their toes and you always knew where you stood with her. Beneath that tough exterior was a woman who loved her family deeply, adored her dogs, and fiercely protected those she cared about.

Charlotte and family would like to gratefully thank the staff at Atchison Senior Village for their care and patience over the past eight years. We would also like to thank all of the staff at St Croix Hospice for their care and helping to make her final days comfortable.

Charlotte is survived by her four sons: Alan Thompson (Nan) of Leavenworth, Keith Thompson (Nancy) of Hickory, NC, Michael Thompson of Atchison, and Eric Thompson (Julie) of Broomfield, CO. She is also survived by her sisters Barbara Roberts and Kim Moutray, and her brothers Mark Stewart and Randy Stewart, all of St Joseph, MO. Also surviving are her grandchildren: Lance Thompson of Leavenworth, Kelsea Thompson of Beaumont, TX, Nicole Thompson of Hickory, NC, Jami Ayala of Little Elm, TX, Montana Thompson of Golden, CO, Sophia Aque of Grand Rapids, MI, and Audrey Thompson of Broomfield, CO. Also surviving are 9 Great Grandchildren.

Preceding Charlotte in death are her husband Sonny Thompson, her parents Charles and Bernice Thomas, her grandson Clinton Michael Thompson, her brother Dennis Thomas, her sister Mary Thomas, and her brother Galen Stewart, all of St Joseph, Missouri.
