Charles Elbert McCray, 90, of Atchison, Kansas, passed away Saturday, August 17, 2019 at Vintage Park in Atchison.

Charles has been cremated under the care and direction of the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. No services will be held. Private family interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery at a later date.

Charles was born on July 8, 1929, in Atchison, Kansas, the son of Jesse D. and Gladys V. (Christie) McCray. He attended St. Benedict's Grade School, graduated from Atchison High School, and attended Kansas City Kansas Junior College where he graduated with an Associate's of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice.

He and Mary JoAnn Griffith were united in marriage on March 10, 1960, at the Leavenworth Courthouse. She preceded him in death on September 30, 1991.

He was employed at the Lansing Correctional Facility as a Correctional Counselor for thirty-four years before retiring in November of 1991. He was a resident of Lansing, Kansas during his employment and then returned to Atchison, Kansas in 1992.

Charles proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, United States Army and the National Guard. He was a life member of the American Legion, life member of the V.F.W., member of Korean War Veteran's Association. He also belonged to the Friends of the Atchison Library, Atchison Genealogical Society, Salvation Army Disaster Services and he served as a volunteer host at the National Guard Museum in Topeka, Kansas. He enjoyed reading and watching television.

He is survived by his brother, Larry (Linda) McCray, St. Joseph, Missouri;and a sister-in-law, Pat McCray, Atchison, KS.

He is preceded in death by his wife; daughter, Shannon Morgan on February 10, 2016; and a brother, Paul McCray.
