Atchison

With a heart full of laughter and a spirit that lit up every room, Charles Hilary Trotter, fondly known as Chuck, departed this world on January 2, 2026, after a brief illness. He was 68 years young, a proud son of Mary Jane (Janie Hayes) and Harry Darby Trotter, Sr. Born in Borger, Texas, and raised in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Chuck was the fifth of nine children, a role that gifted him with a lifelong love for family, adventure, and a bit of good-natured mischief. A passionate hunter and athlete in high school, he carried his love for baseball to Central States University in Oklahoma where he played. His journey then took him to the wilds of Alaska, where he worked on the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System, before returning to earn a business degree from Oklahoma State University—a reflection of his relentless curiosity and zest for life.

Chuck eventually moved to Atchison, Kansas, where he was active in both the financial services and hospitality sectors, owning Trotter's On The River. However, it was his infectious smile and that dry sense of humor that truly made him a local legend. He was a devoted father to his son, Charles Harry Hayes Trotter. The happiness Harry brought to Chuck's life was unmatched, and he poured his heart into being a supportive dad and coach, cheering from the sidelines and driving kids to countless sporting events across the country.

A true lover of life, Chuck was known for creating moments filled with laughter, good food, Irish whiskey, a shot of this or that, or a cold beer. He had a knack for good-natured pranks and unexpected surprises, including his iconic KC Chiefs school bus, which became a beloved symbol of fun at local events and NASCAR races. Chuck believed in having a good time, and loved celebrations, ensuring that everyone around him felt that happiness.

Chuck was not just a fixture in Atchison; he made it better. His devotion to faith, family, and community shone through in everything he did. Whether coaching, mentoring, or simply lending a hand, he left an indelible mark on the lives he touched. He is survived by his beloved son, Harry, and Harry's wife, Presley, along with the exciting news of a grandson on the way. Chuck also leaves behind his eight siblings: Dr. Darby Trotter Sr. and his wife, Barbara; Nancy Cless and her husband, Dwain, Bill Trotter and his wife, Kris; Jim Trotter and his wife, Patty; Chet Trotter and his wife, Sherri; Mary McCormick and her husband, Scott; Florence Wise; and Jack Trotter and his wife, Robin, along with many nieces and nephews that will miss him dearly.

As we gather to celebrate Chuck's extraordinary life, let us remember the laughter, love, and light he brought to our lives. He may have departed from this world, but his spirit will live on in the stories we share, the memories we cherish, and the love that continues to flourish in our hearts. In true Irish spirit, may we raise a glass to Chuck—a true friend, father, brother, uncle, and community champion. Sláinte!
