Bernice Holmes, 99, Atchison, Kansas died Sunday, January 27, 2013 at the Atchison Hospital.

Eastern Star services will be held Friday, February 1, 2013 at 7:00 P.M. at the Masonic Lodge, 123 N. 5th Street, Atchison. Private family graveside services will be held at a later date in Union Star, Missouri. Memorial contributions are suggested to First Christian Church of Atchison or Martha Washington chapter #215 and may be left in care of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home, Atchison, Kansas with whom the final arrangements have been entrusted.

Mrs. Holmes was born December 28, 1913 near Union Star, Missouri the daughter of George and Bessie Mae Bottorff. She graduated from Union Star High School and attended Northwest Missouri State University, Maryville, Missouri.

She was a member of First Christian Church, Atchison, Kansas more that 50 years, teaching Sunday School Class of freshman girls for many years and serving on numerous committees in the church.

She was a member of Martha Washington Chapter #215, Atchison, holding numerous offices during her sixty-five years membership. She was past Matron of the Past Matron organization, a charter member of Soroptimist Club, Past President of Atchison Garden Club, member of Business and Profesional Women's Club and a charter member of Kansas City depreciation glass club.

Mrs. Holmes was well known as an active republican serving many years on the Atchison County Republican Central Committees.

On September 28, 1935 she was united in marriage to John I. Holmes at the Wyatt Christian Church, St. Joseph, Missouri and they spent their entire married life in Atchison, Kansas. Mr. Holmes was owner and manager of a contracting firm and at retiring age Mrs. Holmes became an investor in antiques and collectable items. She was an appraiser of antiques, traveling throughout the area advising those seeking information of their heirlooms, always willing to share her talent with others.

She was a devoted mother and grandmother and enjoyed her time spent with family members. She is survived by three grandsons, John D. Holmes and his children, Atchison, KS, Mark and Polly Holmes and their three boys, Olathe, KS, Timothy and Inez Holmes and their two children, Overland Park, KS, ten great grandchildren and three great great grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John on August 28, 1981 and her only child William L. Holmes on September 21, 2000, her dearest friend and ex-daughter-in-law, Gretchen Muncy on January 18, 2000, her mother, father and two sisters, Clova and Norma.
