Alta "Berniece" Begesse

Alta "Berniece" Begesse, 89, Atchison, Kansas died at the Atchison Senior Village Nursing Center.
Funeral services will be Saturday, March 10, 2012 at 10:30 A.M. at First Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Paul W. Stevens officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Troy, Kansas. Visitation with family will be for one hour preceding services at the church. The Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home has been entrusted with these final arrangements. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Berneice Begesse Memorial Fund to assist with final expenses and may be left in care of funeral home.
Berniece was born July 21, 1922 in Adel, Iowa the daughter of Elmer and Ethel Smith Greenwood. She attended schools in Iowa and later moved to Atchison, Kansas.
She was employed for many years as a housekeeper for several private residences in Atchison and then became employed in the housekeeping department for Atchison Hospital for 25 years until her retirement.
Berniece was a longtime and devoted member of First Baptist Church, Atchison. In her spare time she enjoyed playing cards, cooking for her family and friends, crocheting, quilting and spending time with her family.
Survivors include two daughters, Verna M. Chamberlin, Atchison, KS, Janice Wilburn, St. Joseph, MO, five sons, Gene (Dena) Begesse, Muscotah, KS, Kenneth L. (Sharon) Smith, Troy, KS, Daniel D. (Val) Smith, Atchison, KS, Vernon A. "Herman" (Jackie) Begesse, Everest, KS, Otto"Charles" (Patricia) Begesse, Temple, TX, twenty-one grandchildren and numerous great and great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Ann Crawley, two great-grandchildren, Alyssa Hill and Marcus Crawley, two sisters, Dorothy Greenwood, Nadine Zumalt and five brothers, Deforest, Glen, Jay, Jerry and James Greenwood.
